Meg SmithThe Nurtured Way began as a doula practice in Philadelphia, PA. It was born out of a desire to serve women and families throughout the childbearing year, and to offer encouragement to embrace pregnancy and birth as a normal and natural process.

Now in its third year, The Nurtured Way continues to evolve. After some much needed time away, I have been enjoying blogging again and getting back into birth work. My current service offerings include birth doula, postpartum doula, and placenta preparations.

In other news, the directory of doulas, midwives and other holistic practitioners, continues to grow, and I will be adding to an ever expanding list of resources to support a sustainable lifestyle.

A little more about me:

In addition to being a birth worker, I am a wife, and mama of two boys. I also spent the last decade in the Online Marketing/SEO industry. As for other interests… I love to cook, from scratch, with local and organic ingredients, I’m a knitter obsessed with wool, enjoy writing, reading, and am an avid student of herbalism and am currently preparing a variety of tinctures, vinegars, oils, and teas to be offered in the new year as part of my online apothecary… I am a newly certified Reiki Practitioner and am enrolled to continue my studies with the goal of completing my master teacher level in 2012. I love to work out, though I don’t enjoy the city air, and as much as I love our neighborhood in Philly, I hope to someday pick-up my family and move to a little homestead!

Curious about my training and experience?

You can find more details about my background and approach under each of the service areas, but a few bullet points…

  • I trained as a birth doula with Birth Arts International in 2009 and have been steadily completing my certification requirements, including attending births, attending childbirth education classes, taking hospital tours, and reading many many books covering pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and the many variations that can occur during each of those cycles.
  • I studied with Nikki Lee in Philadelphia to become a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor in 2010.
  • I also attended the Midwifery Today Conference in 2010 and took part in a variety of seminars which examined both physical techniques and spiritual/emotional aspects of birth work.
  • I am certified in Neonatal Resuscitation through April 2012.
  • I am a student herbalist under Rosemary Gladstar.

In love and light…
